Tell Congress: Protect Primates from the Cruel Pet Trade

Thousands of primates are suffering in private homes and roadside cages across the United States, with no federal protections in place. Urge your legislators to co-sponsor the Captive Primate Safety Act (H.R. 3199/S. 1594) to end the inhumane private ownership and trade of nonhuman primates.

Dear Congressional Leaders:

As your constituent, I am asking that you please co-sponsor the Captive Primate Safety Act.

The Captive Primate Safety Act, (H.R. 3199/S. 1594), prohibits the private possession of nonhuman primates and their sale or transportation for the “pet” trade.

Apes, monkeys, and other nonhuman primates are highly intelligent with complex psychological, physical, and social needs that cannot be met in private homes. Yet it is estimated that thousands are kept as “pets” across the United States due to a patchwork of inadequate state laws and regulations.

Aside from the welfare concerns, keeping nonhuman primates as companion animals poses a serious safety risk for both the animals and nearby humans and communities.

Though some states have regulated the private possession of nonhuman primates, many have not, and there are no federal laws governing the sale or the private possession of these animals. This patchwork of state and local laws is insufficient to ensure both nonhuman primates’ well-being and human health and public safety.

To protect nonhuman primates and communities, please co-sponsor the Captive Primate Safety Act.

Thank you.
